Nigeria Has A Fresh Direction With Star1960
In many communities, when the name Nigeria comes up, it brings many thoughts and feelings to mind. Usually, they are not good thoughts.
But is this reaction an accurate representation of the facts?
“It’s not” states the newly launched Nigeria news and entertainment portal Star1960.com , and they are willing to prove their point, with data, news reports, and soon, community effort.
According to the website’s owners, the average Nigerian “in his natural state” is probably one of the highest performers and positive influencers, that you’ll ever meet.
They claim that the country’s recent past with an “obnoxiously wealthy military leadership” encouraged a new era where the Nigerian people found it more rewarding to follow the path of “jack-boot reasoning”, and short-term gratification, than any personal development goals or social standards.
Interestingly, they say, the more the country’s perceived reputation plays out worldwide and local media, including Nigeria’s own movies, the lower the country’s collective standards tend to fall, with an ever increasing number of citizens believing it may be out-of-character, or at least futile to follow a path of hardwork, creativity and merit, to any appreciable level of personal success.
As Peter Aikude, the website’s developer states, Star1960 aims to break this “destructive downward spiral” in two steps.
“Now, we are providing an entertaining magazine update everyday, of Nigerians doing great in Hollywood Movies, Music, Arts, Business and Sports all over the world. By enabling Nigerians to converge daily to recognize, discuss, celebrate and be inspired by articles of positive achievement and merit in our community, as well as solutions to important social issues, we aim to gradually build a strong, well-informed population who set higher standards for themselves, their society and their leaders.”
Apart from driving behavior change, the group is also looking for institutional support, to create what they describe as an accountable and attractive career path for all citizens who are “passionate” about bringing positive change to their various communities.
According to Peter:
“When this second part of the project rolls out, Nigerians will find it more fun, more socially correct, and more financially rewarding to engage in acts of developing their communities, as well as developing themselves”.
Peter Aikude himself, recently became Africa’s highest skilled web-programmer in the PHP4 genre, according to skill test rankings by Elance and ExpertRating.
