Crimson Tide Running Back Mark Ingram Wins 2009 Heisman Trophy
University of Alabama running back Mark Ingram won this year’s Heisman Trophy; it was the closet race in history, as he just edged out Stanford’s running back Toby Gerhart to get the award. Ingram had a big season for the nations No.1 team, including, a 3 touchdown 113 yard performance against the Florida Gators in the SEC championship game. He finished the 2009 regular season with 1,542 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns; he also caught for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Ingram helped guide the Crimson Tide to their second straight undefeated regular season. When his name was called everyone applauded the sophomore tailback, but it wasn’t until he got up on stage to accept his award, when he broke down into tears. “I’m a little overwhelmed right now,” Ingram said. “I’m just so excited to bring Alabama their first Heisman winner.” Ingram became the first University of Alabama to win the Heisman, out of all their great history, their many national championships, it was not until now Alabama would get their missing trophy and it was Mark Ingram who delivered it. Ingram was given 227 first place votes (1,304) Toby Gerhart from Stanford got 222 first place votes (1,276). It was the closet vote for a reason, these two athletes gave all they had and made big impacts on their team’s success in the 2009 season. Mark Ingram will now try to achieve another award, a team award, the national championship title when his Alabama Crimson Tide will face off against the Big-12 champs Texas Longhorns on January, 6th in Pasadena, California.
Ingram is the son of former New York Giants wide receiver Mark Ingram Sr. The Bama tailback will have another year to achieve his second Heisman trophy, something only one other player has accomplished (Archie Griffin 1974, 1975). In his freshman last season, Ingram ran for 728 yards with 12 touchdowns while backing up then star running back Glen Coffee. Ingram showed up big this past season when it mattered the most, he ran for a career high 246 yards in Alabama’s win over South Carolina. The sophomore halfback will have to put aside his great achievements from this past season so he can focus on the biggest trophy of them all, the national title.
The Texas Longhorns will be the only thing standing in their way from a perfect title championship season, the Longhorns took the Big-12 title, finishing the 2009 season 12-0, heading into the BCS Championship game. If Mark Ingram decides to stay for another two years at Alabama, he’ll have a shot at something no one has ever done in the 75 years of the Heisman Trophy, and that’s winning 3 Stiff Arm trophies, I however, would not count of that too happen. – Get breaking sports news at The Sports Weekly.
